George :: Bichon

George’s mom received a FidoJournalism session as a gift from her friends (yes, dog photography makes a great gift!), but we had to wait to schedule the session after the groomer mixed George up with another dog and gave him the wrong haircut - a mohawk, I think. While that would have made for some funny pictures, I’m glad I got the real George because he was super cute.

He loves to play with his toys and chew on his treats. He was a little bundle of energy and kept me on my toes, but I think we got some great shots:

George gets lots of attention from his mom.

I was worried that George was afraid of the camera, but apparently he likes to play hide and go seek under the couch.

There was some yummy light in the bedroom.

I think this was my favorite shot of the session.

A Day in My Life

I don’t usually post stuff from my “other” job as a wedding photographer for Love Life Images, Inc., but this was too fun not to share. Each year we have a day where we take a camera with us everywhere and shoot our lives from morning til night. We turn it into a fun photo story slideshow. Of course Jingles and Cooley make their appearances, so I guess it’s somewhat relevant to this blog.

The shoot was Wednesday, which happened to be a day when our day care provider was unavailable, so I “had” to bring our son Ryan to the studio with me. Of course he made his way into nearly every shot, so it’s really a story of his day. But my life pretty much revolves around him now, so it makes sense. The logistics of getting an 8-month old ready while shooting pictures was a bit tough, but we had fun.

For my photographer friends, this is a really fun exercise and helps you think about how to make every moment into a picture. There’s always a picture to be made, even in the seemingly mundane. This is the second year we’ve done this, and it’s great to have a snapshot (no pun intended) of my life and to see how things change from year to year.

Okay, enough babbling… here is a Day in My Life: http://www.lovelifeimages.com/stephendaylife2008

Let me know what you think!

Oh, and since I should post a picture with every post, here is Ryan trying to kiss Cooley. We’re trying to get the dogs to stop licking him in the face, but it’s tough when Ryan WANTS to go in for the kiss!

October 1, 2008 - 12:47 pm leesia - what an awesome project!! there are so many fantastic images in there...they're all swimming in my head right now...the wide one with Ryan's hands pressed up against the window, the mirror shots, ryan's tongue out and going for the shoe lol, the toothbrushes even!, and i love the colbert report too. :p thanks for sharing!

Cats! :: Molly & Buster

Molly and Buster were my first official cats-only session. I never know what to expect with cats, and am always afraid they’ll be afraid of the camera and run away. Buster was the complete opposite. He has his spot in his chair, and he doesn’t move! Literally, he didn’t get up the whole time I was there. Molly was a little more camera shy at first, but she warmed up and I really like the shots of her as well.

Buster took time out of his nap to acknowledge my presence.

Not for long though…

Here’s Molly. I love her green eyes against the green wall.

Little Jordan loves playing with her feline sibs.

Buster plays a game where he tries to swat a little toy out of the air.

I almost deleted this shot, but ended up really liking the dramatic light.

More Molly…

Finally, Buster being Buster.

September 24, 2008 - 4:35 pm claire - these cat photos are really lovely - and i think cats are far more difficult than dogs, so well done! love the silverspring dog days stuff as well!

October 14, 2008 - 1:35 am nick - I was never much of a cat person but after taking so many pictures of them they just grew on me. I'm glad you didn't delete that shot too, the lighting is quite nice.

October 27, 2008 - 10:25 pm Tracy - I love the shots of Buster "playing" with the toy whilst he still refuses to actually get up! And I'm super glad you didn't delete the one shot either... LOVE it!

Dog Days of Downtown Silver Spring

This past Saturday was the first Dog Days of Downtown Silver Spring event, and we had a beautiful day for it.  The event was also a grand opening for the fabulous new pet store in Silver Spring, Living Ruff.  Owners Ron and Jessica are animal lovers first and foremost, and have put together a store of high quality products, healthy food and treats, and unique gifts for pet lovers. And their location can’t be beat, right in the heart of Downtown Silver Spring.

Ron and Jessica were gracious enough to invite me to have a table at the event, along with some other fabulous vendors and organizations. I met so many wonderful people and pets (who I hope I’ll have the chance to work with soon!).

Here are a few of my favorites:

They had face painting for kids… with a cat or dog theme.

Ron and Jessica were handing out delicious looking doggie treats.

I love Weimaraners.

Canine Companions for Independence brought some of the cutest dogs.

In this heated election season, every opinion must be heard. The folks at Pawlitical Pooch set up an independent poll for politically-minded pooches. Unofficial exit polling had the donkeys favored over the elephants.

Artist Glen Kessler explains the process of making a pet portrait.

The new Living Ruff store, located right on Georgia Avenue.

These Bernese Mountain Dogs were two of my favorite dogs of the day. They were so sweet…

… and a bit of a handful…

These two made me laugh.

I love the layers of dogs in this one…

September 30, 2008 - 10:09 am Justin Ressler - Incredible photography, great job of taking an event where most people would take 'snapshots' and turning them into photographs. I'd like to see the photos linked to a gallery with EXIF data. Very nice. -j

September 30, 2008 - 5:15 pm Carol Weldin - I may be biased, but I think the cutest puppy EVER, was Hogan, the CCI puppy! (smile)
